Finale's Musical Closure & NYT Mini Crossword's Tricky Thursday: A Tale of Endings and Wordplay

This week's news blends the world of musical terminology and daily puzzles. 'Finale,' in music, refers to the concluding section of a composition, offering a sense of closure. Meanwhile, the New York Times Mini Crossword on January 9th, 2025, presented some challenging clues. These ranged from a 'sinister' English word and a Latin term to a 'Muppet,' a 'pet,' and even a 'slimy' creature. The puzzle also tested solvers with a 'high-tech beam' and a playground retort, making it a genuinely tricky Thursday challenge.

Wondering what English word means "sinister" in Latin? Not sure what Muppet has a pet worm named Slimey? Don’t worry, because I'm here to help you with the answers for today's NYT Mini crossword.

The NYT Mini is a quick and dirty version of the newspaper's larger and long-running crossword. Most days, there are between three and five clues in each direction on a five by five grid, but the puzzles are sometimes larger, especially on Saturdays.

Unlike its larger sibling, the NYT Mini crossword is free to play on the New York Times website or NYT Games app. However, you’ll need an NYT Games subscription to access previous puzzles in the archives.

To help you avoid getting stuck and having to reveal missing letters, here are the NYT Mini Crossword answers for Thursday, January 9 (spoilers lie ahead, of course):

1 Across: The translation of this English word is "sinister" in Latin — LEFT

5 Across: Brief role for a big star — CAMEO

6 Across: Muppet with a pet worm named Slimey — OSCAR

7 Across: Specifics, slangily — DEETS

8 Across: Playground retort to "Am not!" — ARE SO

1 Down: High-tech beam — LASER

2 Down: Host with a microphone — EMCEE

3 Down: Extraordinary achievements — FEATS

4 Down: Where most of the body's organs are located — TORSO

5 Down: Musical finale — CODA

It took me 1:08 to complete today's NYT Mini.

I struggled a bit with this one, only getting CAMEO as an actual answer on my first pass of the Across clues. I though 8 Across was “am too” at first, which threw me off while trying to fill in the Down words. However, I realized that had to be wrong once I got to CODA. That helped me unlock OSCAR and DEETS, and after that I was off to the races.

I have very little knowledge of Latin, so had no idea about 1 Across without context from other answers. I’m sure that’s not a factoid that certain politically-minded folk will weaponize at all.

Make sure to follow my blog for more coverage of the NYT Mini and other word games, as well as video game news, insights and analysis. It helps me out a lot! Also, follow me on Bluesky! It’s fun there.
