Mandy Moore Shares Heartbreaking Footage of Her 'Sweet Home' Destroyed by L.A. Fire: 'Absolutely Numb'
Mandy Moore is facing a devastating loss.
The This Is Us star, 40, shared an update about her "home" on Instagram amid the ongoing Los Angeles wildfires on the afternoon of Wednesday, Jan. 8.
"This is Altadena. Leveled. My sweet home. I am devastated and gutted for those of us who’ve lost so much. I’m absolutely numb," she wrote over a video showing scorched and still-burning buildings she passed while driving down the road in the northeast L.A. neighborhood.
It was not immediately clear whether Moore's personal home was destroyed, but her community has unquestionably been devastated.
She followed her initial Stories post with another Instagram expressing gratitude for her family's safety and detailing the destruction she witnessed.
"Grateful for my family and pets getting out last night before it was too late (and endless gratitude to friends for taking us in and bringing us clothes and blankets)," she wrote. "Honestly, I’m in shock and feeling numb for all so many have lost, including my family."
She continued, "My children’s school is gone. Our favorite restaurants, leveled. So many friends and loved ones have lost everything too. Our community is broken but we will be here to rebuild together. Sending love to all affected and on the front lines trying to get this under control."
Moore had previously shared via her Instagram Stories on Wednesday that she and her family had evacuated and didn't know if their house had survived.
“Praying for everyone in our beautiful city. So gutted for the destruction and loss. Don’t know if our place made it,” Moore wrote, alongside a photo of herself sitting with her son Ozzie.
“Grateful for the kindness of friends that we had a place to land last night. Trying to shield the kids from the immense sadness and worry I feel,” Moore continued.
The actress lives with her husband, Taylor Goldsmith, 39, and their kids, August "Gus" Harrison, 3, Oscar "Ozzie" Bennett, 2, and 3-month-old Louise Everett and they are just some of the tens of thousands of people who had to evacuate their homes.
Moore had recently completed a six-year renovation of their property.
The actress often shared her passion for interior design and the progress on her home project on social media, including an update that it was nearly complete and just receiving its finishing touches in February 2023. Moore's previous home in Pasadena, Calif., was featured on the cover of Architectural Digest in 2018.
The Eaton fire that impacted Moore's neighborhood started on Tuesday, Jan. 7. By late morning on Wednesday, it had exploded to 10,000 acres.
Eaton and other fires continue to burn across the L.A. area, and multiple people have been reported dead.
Among the more than 80,000 people who've been impacted are a number of famous faces.
Spencer Pratt, Heidi Montag and Cameron Mathison reported that their homes were completely destroyed.
Soap star Mathison shared a video of the remains of his home in a heartbreaking video posted to Instagram. "We are safe But this is what’s left of our beautiful home. Our home where our kids were raised and where they wanted to raise their own someday," he wrote under the post. "Thanks to all who reached out and checked in. Can’t respond to all so wanted to give an update here," he added. "Sending so many prayers to everyone being affected by these fires."
In a harrowing video posted on TikTok, Pratt, the former The Hills star, shared that his home was among those burned down.
"Nightmare came true," the father of two captioned the video.
His wife posted a follow-up TikTok in which she confirmed the loss of their home and thanked fans for prayers and thoughts: "Thank God we are safe ... it's just ... no words."

Mark Hamill, Mandy Moore, and other stars forced to evacuate L.A. homes amid 'horrific' Palisades fire
Luke Skywalker himself is among the thousands of people who were forced to abandon their homes and evacuate Los Angeles in the wake of destructive wildfires ravaging the county.
On Tuesday night, Mark Hamill gave fans a personal update of his experience with the fires, writing on Instagram that he "evacuated Malibu so last-minute there (were) small fires on both sides of the road as we approached [Pacific Coast Highway]."
The Star Wars actor explained that at 8:15 pm that night, his wife Marilou York and their dog Trixie arrived at their daughter Chelsea’s house in Hollywood. He added, “Most horrific fire since ’93. STAY SAFE!”
In the caption of his post, Hamill also corrected himself for referring to the fires as "small." He wrote, "Gimme a break- we were fleeing for our lives."
Entertainment Weekly has reached out to representatives of Hamill for additional updates.
Multiple wildfires are burning out of control in Los Angeles County and as of Wednesday morning, show no sign of letting up. The largest of the blazes, the Palisades Fire, broke out near the Pacific Palisades neighborhood on Tuesday morning and has burned at least 2,900 acres. According to the Associated Press, approximately 30,000 residents have been instructed to evacuate, as over 13,000 structures are considered to be under threat.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency on Tuesday night, as high winds and dry conditions threatened to amplify the spread of the flames.
Hamill was not the only celebrity who used his platform to spread awareness of the destruction, as many others took to social media with updates on their own homes and safety.
This Is Us alum Mandy Moore assured fans of her safety on Tuesday night, writing in an Instagram Story post, "Evacuated and safe with kids, dog, and cats. Praying and grateful for the first responders."
The actress, who shares two toddler sons and a newborn daughter with husband Taylor Goldsmith, later shared an additional note early Wednesday morning.
"Grateful for the kindness of friends that we had a place to land last night," she wrote. "Trying to shield the kids from the immense sadness and worry I feel. Praying for everyone in our beautiful city. So gutted for the destruction and loss. Don't know if our place made it."
General Hospital actor Cameron Mathison shared a firsthand look at the devastation with a video of his home, which was leveled by the fires.
"We are safe. But this is what’s left of our beautiful home," Mathison captioned the post. "Our home where our kids were raised and where they wanted to raise their own someday. Thanks to all who reached out and checked in. Can’t respond to all so wanted to give an update here. Sending so many prayers to everyone being affected by these fires."
The Hard Way actor James Woods shared several photos of the fire blazing in his neighborhood, per security cameras around his home.
"To all the wonderful people who’ve reached out to us, thank you for being so concerned," he wrote in an X post. "Just letting you know that we were able to evacuate successfully. I do not know at this moment if our home is still standing, but sadly houses on our little street are not."
The actor also went on to deny that the raging fires are in any way related to climate change, calling one X user a "liberal idiot" for suggesting otherwise.
Woods later appeared on CNN where he broke down crying on air after sharing that his house was destroyed by the fires. "It was paradise," he said of the newly-renovated home. "One day you’re swimming in the pool and the next day it’s all gone."
Comedian and 2 Broke Girls co-creator Whitney Cummings shared a photo of her holding her toddler, with a fire engine in the background.
"LAFD [and] just all fire fighters, thank you," she wrote. "Gonna be a wild couple days. As I seriously consider moving out of California I remember these heroes don’t think that way."
Jennifer Love Hewitt, who has spent 7 seasons working alongside fictional firefighters on the ABC drama 9-1-1, praised first responders for their diligence on Wednesday morning.
"I have no words. Only prayers and holding as much hope as I can for our home and our kids while we watch everything burn," she began the post. "Thank you to every first responder fighting so hard for all of us. Thank you to every friend who reached out and new person I have hugged in tears in the last 24 hours."
Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt chimed in as well, offering similar praise to first responders.
"Please send prayers and strength tonight to everyone in Los Angeles affected by these devastating fires. Los Angeles is in a state of emergency and over 30,000 have been ordered to evacuate," Pratt began in his post. "Thank you to the brave firefighters and first responders who are working tirelessly to protect lives, homes, and wildlife as they battle fast-moving wildfire fueled by fierce winds. You are true heroes, and we are endlessly grateful for your sacrifice and courage."
He concluded, "Let’s all come together to support one another during this tough time."
Kate Beckinsale, who shares now 26-year-old daughter Lily Mo with ex Michael Sheen, lamented the destruction of the neighborhood where her daughter was raised.
"Hearing the winds last night I prayed. I knew it would be bad- we had to evacuate many times during our life there - but the shock at the whole of the Palisades being destroyed is unthinkably horrific," she wrote on Instagram. "My daughter and I lived there for most of her childhood and most of her childhood is gone Her primary school, every shop or restaurant we used to go to with my parents and Michael’s parents — and devastatingly, most of her friends homes. My heart is broken."
In subsequent posts, she shared several resources and encouraged followers to reach out via DM if they needed help finding a shelter in their area.
The Big Bang Theory alum Kaley Cuoco offered "prayers for the incredible first responders, all the homes being lost, loved ones and animals," adding, "This is heartwrenching to witness what's happening in our own backyard."
Schitt's Creek creator and star Dan Levy shared a photo of the forest raging in the distance, writing, "This is the view from my window this morning. Heartbroken for my family, my friends, and the people of L.A. affected by these catastrophic fires."
Frozen star Josh Gad shared his view of the fires as well, posting a video from afar.
"I hope everyone is staying safe tonight in the affected fire areas in Los Angeles," he wrote. "My deepest gratitude and appreciation goes out to our brave fire and rescue and police forces who are doing everything in their power to keep the residents of Los Angeles safe right now."
Rather than sharing photos of the destruction, Diane Warren offered a peaceful seaside snap, while mourning her beach house.
"This is the last pic I took of Leah's rock from my beach house," Warren explained. "I've had this house for almost 30 years. It looks like it was lost in the fire last nite [sic]. There's a rainbow shining on it which I'm taking as a sign of hope for all creatures who have been affected by this tragedy. The animals and the rescue ranch are OK tho which is the most important thing. Stay safe everyone."
Other stars, including Grammy-winner Billie Eilish, expressed sympathy for those currently residing in L.A. while sharing resources. "What's going on in LA right now is sooo scary and devastating," the "Birds of a Feather" singer wrote on Instagram, offering a link to the LAFD website, where L.A. residents can find "important updates to help keep yourselves and your pets safe."

Mandy Moore and her kids evacuate LA home as destructive wildfire spreads: ‘Don’t know if our place made it’
Mandy Moore confirmed she’s “safe” from the Pacific Palisades wildfire.
The “This Is Us” star, 40, was among the tens of thousands of Los Angeles residents who were forced to evacuate their homes on Tuesday as the destructive blaze continues to wreak havoc on the area of Southern California.
“Evacuated and safe with kids, dog and cats,” Moore wrote on her Instagram Stories.
“Praying and grateful for the first responders,” she added.
Moore shared another statement on her IG Stories Wednesday alongside a photo of her with one of her sons.
“Grateful for the kindness of friends that we had a place to land last night. Trying to shield the kids from the immense sadness and worry I feel,” she wrote “Praying for everyone in our beautiful city. So gutted for the destruction and loss. Don’t know if our place made it.”
Moore shares three children, sons August, 3, and Oscar, 2, and daughter Louise, 3 months, with husband Taylor Goldsmith.
The “Candy” singer and her family seemingly still live in the Pasadena home that she announced they were selling in July 2024.
“It’s the end of an era,” Moore wrote on Instagram as she announced the sale of the 3,551-square-foot home.
“Today, our home that we lovingly restored from the studs, is available for its next chapter and owner,” she continued. “It’s bittersweet as @taylordawesgoldsmith and I got engaged, married and brought home 2 babies here but I’m thrilled to see who she goes to next.”
“It’s SUCH a special space,” Moore added about the midcentury house, and gave a shout-out to the designers, landscapers and builders who helped her “make our dream home a reality.”
The California residence landed on the market for $6 million in July. Moore and Goldsmith bought it for $2.6 million in 2017, according to Architectural Digest.
Moore joins Eugene Levy, Mark Hamill and James Woods on the growing list of celebrities who have evacuated their homes due to the wildfire, which started in Pacific Palisades around 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
Woods’ neighbor lost their home, he said on X after he fled.
Reality TV stars Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag lost their Pacific Palisades home in the massive blaze, according to TMZ, just hours after Pratt shared a video of a plane dropping water on the nearby flames on Instagram.
Ben Affleck, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, and Miles Tiller and Keleigh Sperry also have homes in Pacific Palisades.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency after touching down in the Pacific Palisades area and meeting with first responders fighting the blaze that has so far torched more than 3,000 acres, according to CalFire.
President Biden urged Pacific Palisades residents to remain “vigilant” and said he’s offered federal assistance to help California authorities battle the blaze.
“Earlier tonight, FEMA approved a Fire Management Assistance Grant to support areas that are impacted and help reimburse the state of California for the immediate firefighting costs. My Administration will do everything it can to support the response,” Biden said in a statement.
Mandy Moore announces birth of her third child … and it’s a girl!
Mandy Moore, who played a mom of three on "This is Us," now has her own personal "Big Three." And they're all 3 years old or younger.
Moore announced her third pregnancy earlier this year with a sweet image of her older boys, 3-year-old August ‘Gus’ Harrison Goldsmith and almost 2-year-old Oscar ‘Ozzie’ Bennett Goldsmith. The “Dr. Death” star shares all three kids with her husband, Taylor Goldsmith.
The 40-year-old actress announced the birth of her third child on Instagram on Sept. 25 with a photo taken by her doula. She added this caption: "Lou is here! Louise Everett Goldsmith arrived happy, healthy, expeditiously and right in time for Virgo season. She is our absolute dream girl and her big brothers are already as obsessed with her as we are. Endlessly grateful for our family of 5 (and our very own big three) and soaking in every moment of this special time."
While pregnant for the second time, Moore explained why she opted out of an epidural for her first pregnancy — and why she'd have to do the same in the future.
“My platelets are too low for an epidural,” Moore told TODAY Parents in an interview in July 2022. The actor noted that she had an unmedicated birth with her older son Gus for the same reason.
“It was awful," Moore recalled. "But I can do it one more time. I can climb that mountain again. I wish medication was an option — just the idea of it being on the table is so nice. But we’ll just push forth like we did last time.”
It seems as though Moore successfully climbed that mountain yet again.
During an October 2023 appearance on TODAY with Hoda & Jenna, Moore shared what it’s like to be a mom of two and said even though its been a “wild” experience for her, she would still like to welcome more kids in the future.
Looks like she'll have the chance to enjoy the sweet chaos that her "big three" will bring!
Mandy Moore Reflects On Young Fame And The ‘Label’ She’d Rather Forget
It is human nature to assign meaning to the world. But although the practice of labeling others is so common as to be automatic, it is not always as innocuous as you might think. When social labels convey singularity, for instance, it can limit the subject’s sense of agency in self-expression. A recent survey conducted by the TJ Maxx reveals that women are particularly hard hit by this phenomenon.
“Like any woman, I have, as long as I can remember, been defined and labeled in a certain way. By no means are those labels necessarily problematic. It is just the idea of someone else [labeling] you and then confining you to that singular identity that becomes problematic,” says actor, director and producer Mandy Moore (see? already with the labels!) on a phone call. She is the celebrity partner for the retailer’s Claim Your And campaign helping empower women to overcome constraining labels and to embrace their authenticity.
The fact is that even seemingly innocent identifiers can come with baggage, like cultural bias or implied exclusivity. More frustrating still is when a woman feels mislabeled—which TJ Maxx’s data indicates happens quite often. Among female respondents, 94% felt labeled with over half feeling impacted from a young age. Yet only 16% felt the labels were accurate.
“I can definitely count myself in that small percentage, especially as a younger person,” Moore continues. Having first achieved global fame as a fifteen-year-old popstar, she discovered the power of outwardly-imposed labels firsthand when she decided to pursue acting a year later. After roles in Princess Diaries and A Walk To Remember, she recalls the friction that came from brushing up against her public image and the expectations that came along with it.
“I do think it makes a lasting impact [to be labeled] when you’re a young person. It was difficult for people to see me outside of the light of a quote unquote popstar. I just was like, I’m more than this! Yes, this is a facet of who I am, but I’m sixteen,” she recalls. “The experience reiterated the message at an early age that [my public image] was something that I was going to have to live with as I moved forward in life.”
She goes on to explain that the experience did not deter her, per se. However, it marked an important life lesson on the impact of public perception on her desired self-expression. At an age when self-exploration is developmentally important, most teens contend with the social constraints of their schools, families and communities. Moore’s experience simply took place before a global audience.
“So much also falls on your own shoulders [of] going through the trials and tribulations of being a young person coming up in the public eye,” she says. “It forces you to grow up a little bit quicker because you’re thrust into an adult world with adult responsibilities that are so different from other people your age.”
While early fame is notorious for sending young stars into tumult that the media capitalizes on, Moore navigated the journey with grace. She did so by utilizing her social supports, like her parents. “Whereas most people my age were probably pulling away from their parents and trying to become more independent, I leaned on them even more,” she recalls. “I had my mom and dad by my side every step of the way. We got to experience all of this together, which was really wonderful.”
Moore relays how the stress of unwanted labels continues on into adulthood, when public scrutiny kept her mired in a chapter she wanted to move on from. “There was a period of my life where I was a recent divorcée. I found that label difficult,” she says of her 2016 divorce from Ryan Adams. “It was not necessarily the stigma that comes with the end of a relationship or perceived failure, I just didn’t want to bring that particular part of my past into my present. It was something that I had to address for a while that I found really tiresome.”
She also found outlets to express herself as a public figure. She confirms being close with the beauty industry’s well-known Streicher sisters—celebrity hair stylist Ashley Streicher, celebrity makeup artist Jen Streicher and celebrity brow guru Kristie Streicher. Like many women, she indulges in self-exploration via her fashion and beauty choices by “taking more risks and having more fun [by] experimenting with hair color and haircuts, or trying a different pop of color on my lips.”
Perhaps the secret to her success is that Moore makes it practice to honor the different facets of her identity. “I’m still defining myself at forty. I’m an actor and a producer and a director. I’m about to be a mother of three. I love hiking—and I want to do more of all of those things,” she emphatically states, noting how each domain of her life “fills her cup” uniquely. “I hope that all of us [keep defining ourselves] and feel like we have the rest of our lives to do so.”
Moore’s journey has left her passionate about empowering women to define themselves on their own terms—a goal that over 80% of women identified with in the survey. If you want to support the cause, you can do so easily: from now until August 31, 2024, TJ Maxx will donate $1 to the women’s empowerment non-profit, Dress For Success, each time the “#ClaimYourAnd” hashtag is posted on Instagram and TikTok.
